Happy New Year everyone! I thought I’d start the first post of the year off with a review of my latest Birchbox box. Sadly I think this will be one of my last ones. My goal was to stick the subscription out for a year but I really haven’t loved most of what I’ve received and I don’t see much point in continuing on.
A couple of things I’ve noticed with Birchbox is that I receive the same brands over and over, and most of these brands aren’t easily accessible through my normal shopping stops (i.e. Sephora, Shoppers Drug Mart, etc.). I’ve also found it really hard to fairly hard to judge some of the products given that they’re only meant for a couple of uses. A product that’s meant to repair your hair or even skin tone won’t likely produce results in one or two uses, so the trial sizes seem a little pointless in my books.
Now after all that negativity, I didn’t hate everything I received last month, but I’m also not likely to buy any of the full size products. So without further adieu, here is what I received in my December Birchbox:
amica Perk Up Dry Shampoo | Full-size, $26
This was the one product I used the most out of my trial box, and it worked very well. I was able to extend washings and it didn’t leave a lot of residue that weighed down my hair. However, the scent is quite strong, pleasant, but strong. If your someone who uses dry shampoo or are interested in trying it, I would recommend this one. I have used other products that smell much worse than this and don’t work as well, so this one is definitely worth a shot.
Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle | Full-size, $26
First off, just remove detangle from the name. I’ve yet to meet a leave in product that actually detangles, this product is of no exception. The spray claims to protect from heat and add silkiness. I’m not much of a blow-dryer so I don’t have much heat damage from styling (maybe I should consider pulling out the hairdryer more often). Having coloured hair, my ends do tend to be drier, but I noticed no difference in how my hair felt. In fact if you’re looking for a product to soften your dry ends I highly recommend this one!
Coastal Scents styleEYES Eyeshadow Palette – formalEYES | Full-size, $22
My palette contained 2 colours, a matte light pink good and a shimmery copper-pink. Both colours are really pretty and the pigmentation of the product seems good. Unfortunately, I can’t think of much to add about this product other than that.
Evelyn Iona Cosmetics Natural & Organic Concealer | Full-size, $22
A natural concealer formulated with coconut, jojoba and castor seed oils. The product is self-described as providing smooth, creamy coverage. I used it a few times and I agree the coverage was excellent, however, I did find the product to be a bit drying in spots. When I need to use concealer my go to is this product, and it covers perfectly without drying my skin!
My Daughter Fragrances Always Loved | Full-size, $85
Okay, so if you actually read my blog on a semi-regular basis, you’ll know how much I don’t like strong scents. I constantly review any perfumed products negatively on the Birchbox site, in hopes that they’ll stop putting perfume in my boxes, but it doesn’t seem to be working. Let’s just say a perfume containing scents of Turkish rose and patchouli isn’t even coming out of the box for me.
So there you have it! I’ll likely have one more Birchbox sent out and that will be that. If you’ve noticed, we haven’t seen any of Danielle’s Ipsy reviews in a while as she’s already cancelled her subscription. So we’re on the hunt for something new! Are there actually any great subscriptions for Canadians out there? Let us know. Drop me a line here or come find me on social media on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook.
